Over the past few years my mother and I have been sharing photos from our gardens from spring until fall. This past summer I started sending flower photos to other family members and friends as well, it’s a perfect way to say hi and I’m thinking of you.
Full disclosure: I’m a green thumb in training who inherited a beautiful perennial garden from the previous homeowner.
With the technology that we currently have it only takes a few minutes to snap a photo and send it off through a text or e-mail, or to post on someone’s Facebook page. This may not be the same as a real life flower delivery, but you can still let someone know you are thinking of them and bring a smile to their face. It could be for a birthday, mother’s day, for someone who is sick and needs cheering up, to say thank you, or just because.

The sunflowers in the heading of this post are from a neighbour’s garden, I posted it on a friend’s Facebook page with her birthday greeting. I have included some additional photos below that I used for mother’s day, a sick friend and just because.
Here are some ideas for taking photos:
- One single flower can be more powerful than a bunch.
- After a rainfall, the water drops create a lovely effect (see the Hydrangea below).
- Plants, there are many lovely plants, ivy for example.
- Colorful fall leaves, for those of us lucky enough to experience them.
- Wild flowers, if you live near the bush (or “woods” for my American friends).
- Garden herbs, lavender is always beautiful.
- Vegetables, fruit or berries, they all have beautiful colours.
- Macro photo, zoom in on the texture of a flower or leaf.
- Flower/insect combinations, challenge yourself and find a flower with a butterfly or bee visiting.
- No garden? No worries, consider: Potted street plants, city gardens, nature trails, retail stores or your neighbour’s garden (men, I’m sure your mom would appreciate the extra effort)
